Milk thistle, known in Chinese as silymarin, is an herb that has been used for thousands of years.  Milk Thistle contains flavonoids, which can promote protein synthesis by anti-oxidative stress.  Milk thistle extract prevents harmful substances from entering liver cells and helps clear toxins from liver cells, including countering the harmful effects of alcohol on the liver. Studies have found that milk thistle contains silymarin, which helps promote liver cell regeneration.  Silymarin extracted from milk thistle seeds can reduce oxidative reaction and subsequent cytotoxicity, thus protecting intact liver cells and some damaged cells, which is beneficial to liver health.  Its antioxidant activity can reduce the generation of free radicals and lipid peroxidation.  The toxin blocking action can inhibit the adhesion of toxin to cell membrane receptor and resist fibrosis.  Can be used for the treatment of alcoholic liver disease, acute and chronic viral hepatitis, toxins caused by the disease.  Milk Thistle is the most abundant source of silymarin and has no obvious toxic and side effects.  In general, milk thistle extract is safe for human consumption, even for long-term use. Silymarin has no obvious side effects in acute toxicity, genotoxicity and subchronic toxicity tests.  Silymarin may protect your liver to some extent if you have to drink regularly, have a habit of staying up late or have an irregular diet with a preference for rich diet.
